Wooden model of Christ on the cross, Casa Buonarroti, Florence, Italy, 5" high, 1562?.
How this model came to Michelagelo's
house is unknown. It could of been
donated or found in a closet with other models that wwere found in his house in the 1800's. The family donated the house to the state for
the 400 anniversary of Michelangelo's
birth.
It is known that before his death
his newphew Leonardo asked his uncle
to make him a wooden cruxifix. In letters sent to his newphew in August 1562 Michelagelo requested that a box of woodworking tools be sent to Rome for the project. Supposably, Michelangelo was working on this
project before he died. Paperwork
may exist to prove this, but as far
as I know there is none. Also
Michelangelo died in 1564 not 1562.
Who knows Michelangelo may have actually finished the wooden cruxifix for his newphew and it has
since been lost.
Wether or not this is the actual wooden model for
the project is questionable.
IMHO, as a artist and not a art
expert, this is a very crude wood model.
Nor does this model appear to have the look and feel of a real Michelangelo. Some "art experts" suggest
that because Michelangelo
was nearly blind when he died
that this could account for the crudeness of this model.
IMHO, if Michelangelo were
to make a model from which to work from it wouod have been in clay or wax his prefered model medium
not wood.
